Debut authors
The Caroline Sheldon Literary Agency is always looking out for exciting projects by debut authors in both adult and children’s books, but out of the enormous amount we see, we select very few. There are occasions when we make detailed editorial suggestions and comments but we only do so when we see real promise in the work. We do not charge a reading fee.
We endeavour to reply to all submissions within 4 weeks. We prefer to see work exclusively but if you are submitting to other agents at the same time please advise us.
To submit:
By post—we like to see a short synopsis, the first three chapters and a covering letter containing all relevant information about you and your writing. Enclose a large stamped addressed envelope if you want the material returned. If you don’t need the material back, enclose a small stamped addressed envelope and a clear instruction in your covering letter not to return the material. Send your submission to Caroline Sheldon Literary Agency, Thorley Manor Farm, Thorley, Yarmouth, PO41 0SJ.
Submissions should be typed in double spacing on one side of paper only. They should not be stapled or bound. We suggest the regular post rather than signed-for services. Please date your letter and remember to include all contact information.
You should retain a copy of the material submitted to us. Whilst every care is taken of manuscripts/submissions we cannot be held responsible for any loss, damage, destruction or delay in their return whatever the cause.
By email—We are happy to look at email submissions but actually believe for debut authors your work gets a more detailed reading if you submit by post. If you choose to submit by email, send the first three chapters (double-spaced) or short text with an introductory letter to Penny Holroyde at pennyholroyde@carolinesheldon.co.uk or Caroline Sheldon at carolinesheldon@carolinesheldon.co.uk. Please do not email submissions to both email addresses. Please ensure that the subject line is marked ‘Submission to the Caroline Sheldon Literary Agency’. We get a lot of spam!
Overseas residents—if you are submitting via the postal service we would appreciate your permission to respond via email and recycle the material as international reply coupons are administratively onerous. Alternatively please submit via email.
Rejection by us in no way means your manuscript is unpublishable. Try other agents and publishers.
